Position Summary The Anesthesiologist is responsible for delivering high-quality anesthesia care to patients undergoing surgical and procedural interventions within the Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC). This role ensures patient safety and comfort throughout the perioperative continuum, including pre-anesthesia evaluation, intraoperative anesthesia management, and post-anesthesia care. The Anesthesiologist collaborates closely with surgeons, nursing staff, and clinical teams to promote efficient operations and optimal patient outcomes.
Key
Responsibilities: Preoperative Care · Conduct comprehensive pre-anesthesia assessments, including medical history review, physical examination, and risk stratification. · Develop individualized anesthesia care plans based on patient condition, surgical requirements, and best practices. · Obtain informed consent and educate patients and families regarding anesthesia risks and expectations. · Participation and collaboration with Pre-Admission Testing Team and in determination of patient appropriateness for surgery in the ambulatory setting. Intraoperative Management · Administer anesthesia using general, local, MAC and regional techniques, including nerve blocks/spinals. · Continuously monitor patient vital signs and physiological responses during procedures. · Respond promptly to changes in patient condition and manage any anesthesia-related complications. · Ensure compliance with all safety standards, protocols, and regulatory requirements. Postoperative Care · Oversee patient recovery from anesthesia in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). · Manage pain control and address postoperative complications such as nausea, respiratory issues, or hemodynamic instability. · Provide discharge criteria guidance in collaboration with nursing staff.
Collaboration & Communication · Work closely with surgeons, CRNAs (if applicable), nurses, and administrative staff to ensure efficient surgical flow. · Participate in daily case reviews, scheduling coordination, and clinical discussions. · Support a team-based approach to patient-centered care. Quality & Compliance · Adhere to all ASC policies, state and federal regulations, and accreditation standards (e.g., AAAHC, Joint Commission). · Participate in quality improvement initiatives, peer reviews, and performance evaluations. · Maintain accurate, timely, and complete documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR). Administrative & Leadership (as applicable) · Assist in developing anesthesia protocols and best practices. · Support staff education and training initiatives. · Contribute to operational efficiency and patient satisfaction goals. · Oversight and collaboration of CRNA teams · Participation quarterly in MAC meetings.
Medication Management · Ensures medications are selected, prepared, labeled, and administered in accordance with organizational policies, evidence-based practice, and regulatory requirements. · Maintains accountability for controlled substances in accordance with federal, state, and facility policies including documentation, wastage, and reconciliation. · Complies with facility policies regarding medication storage, security, handling, and disposal.
Qualifications:
Education & Training · Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited institution. · Completion of an accredited residency program in Anesthesiology. Licensure & Certification · Active and unrestricted medical license in the state of practice. · Board Certified in Anesthesiology. · Current BLS, PALS and ACLS certifications required Experience · Prior experience in an Ambulatory Surgery Center or outpatient surgical setting preferred. · Experience with a broad range of surgical specialties (e.g., orthopaedics, GI, pain management) is a plus. Work Environment · Ambulatory Surgery Center setting with scheduled surgical cases. · Orthopedic Specialty ASC with operating hours of Monday – Friday from 7AM – 5PM. · Collaborative, team-oriented clinical environment focused on efficiency and patient satisfaction. Physical Requirements · Ability to stand for extended periods and perform procedures requiring manual dexterity. · Capability to respond quickly in emergency situations.
